Herbalism from the beginning.
Notes: not all shaman, healers, traditional medicine practitioners practice with spiritual intent, most herbalist find their own spiritual journey through the complex connections by working and learning more about their own specific remedies and techniques.
Book reference: Materia Medica is a traditional belief of healing with plants, it represents: encyclopedic catalog of medicinal substances, their descriptions, actions, and dosages, plant preparations and alchemical properties. Later on it would be considered pharmacology (the term stems from the 1st-century AD work De Materia Medica by the Greek physician Pedanius Dioscorides.)
It’s important to note your own lineage, time of which herbalism was recorded within your own culture and bloodline. As herbalism was practiced all over the world as not only botanical medicine but as food, tradition & ceremonial practices.
Learning from your land: The practice of land based plant knowledge in an also known as Bioregional Herbalism, this practice is ancient and many generations have passed down knowledge from their elders and ancestors to our communities today. Their wisdom is the network or our forests, prairies and meadows.
The best way to explore herbalism is through holistic practices that integrate herbal remedies into your everyday routines, rituals and culinarily preparations.
Note: it’s important to know that you as a practicing herbalist, should not provide cures, subscribe prescriptions and medications.
Note: not all herbs are the same.
Do your own research by trying different herbal teas, some blends vary from energy, relaxation and replenishment.
Great resource to learn more about the chemistry and botany of plants is your local field guides and resources such as the American Botanical Council in Austin Texas. Book reference: Botany in a day by TJ Elpel
As you study the parts of the plants you are working with, you will often find similarities. Take a walk outside to notice patterns and designs on your own native lands and region.
